What happens when the output of a progressive dosing device becomes clogged?

19 Dicembre 2019

Progressive dosing devices are the main element of the progressive lubrication system, used mainly in total loss lubrication systems.

In this type of progressive lubrication system, the lubricant is pumped into a single input by a “progressive distributor” or “divider block”, and is divided volumetrically into a certain number of points through the progressive movement of the pistons arranged in sequence.  Being arranged in sequence, the valves of the dosing device can dispense the lubricant only when the previous one has completed its dispensing times.

What happens if a dosing device output becomes closed?

When the progressive lubrication system is operating, sometimes a progressive dosing device output can become clogged, preventing the delivery of the quantity of grease or oil relative to that output.

What happens is described below:

1. The output plugs up.
2. The pressure rises.
3. The dosing device becomes blocked. Eventually the entire system becomes blocked if the blocked output is only the secondary one.
4. The blockage can be detected in various ways. A cycle sensor on the dosing device was used in the film. Should problems arise, the cycle sensor does not change status and the control panel sounds an alarm.

What to do to restart the lubrication system?

This prevents the normal delivery of lubricant which entails the end of the correct operation of all the progressive dosing devices interconnected and consequently the progressive lubrication system.

To overcome this problem generally it is only necessary to check a single element to identify the failure in the blockage of the lines. In fact, the modularity of the progressive dosing devices allows the operator to quickly replace the element without having to intervene on the connections and the pipes.

The progressive dosing device is a continuous system composed of a minimum of 3 elements which continues to deliver the lubricant until the incoming pressure is no longer present, and the purpose of the cycle sensor is to stop the pump when the necessary quantity of lubricant has been reached. During installation there must be a pressure of 20/25 bar at the input of the dosing device, and also drops in pressure resulting from the length of the pipe must be considered.

When should progressive dosing devices be used?

The system with progressive dosing devices can be used in various applications.

- For small and medium total loss lubrication system (also with recirculating oil and low pressure).
- Any number of points (no more than 300)
- For easy and economical monitoring of the progressive lubrication system.
- In pneumatic, electrical and manual systems.
- For be able to divide the installation into zones.
- To work in ATEX areas and marine environments (INOX 316).
